Very nice annotations. X-Men Noir looks interesting, but it's too expensive to bother with on a monthly basis. If it maintains high praise over its entire run, then I'll look into the trade, but then again if $3.99 becomes the norm for 22 pages of story, I'll be purchasing a lot of comics as trades.

Good job on this one, gentlemen. I was happy to listen to this between research for my histiographic term paper. I got a small kick when I ran across the 'danse macabre' in the preface of a text on economics during Renaissance Florence.

I hope there is an intention to go back and cover the whole run sometime in the future. I think there's still plenty to talk about, even though a metric ton of it has been presented in the annotations.

I was too slammed at the time to comment on your last podcast about the structure of the show. There is only one thing that bugs me when I listen is that there have been a lot of times when you guys will talk right over each other and even though it might get your point across it really turns me off listening despite an otherwise awesome show.

Length isn't really an issue. If it is a 55 minute Batcast or an 80 minute retrospective on Civil War, I really enjoy FBB for taking more in-depth examinations of works, their themes and their flaws.

It'd be great to see more discussion of politics, sex, race, gender, etc. One of my favorite pieces of comic-talk recently was an article on 4th Letter about black fiction and the characters who can embody aspects of culture, such as Luke Cage or Mister Miracle.

Maybe the thing with the Bat-Radia is a clue that Batman is somehow DELIBERATELY gumming up the plans of his captors by fictionalizing aspects of who he is? This would also explain why his ostensible life story would include scenes of him as Mothman and Snakeman and also never becoming Batman at all.

Y'know, I figured that was the current Batwoman. I figured when Robin said he knew about her, he was talking about her being gay. After all, Alfred says she broke Bruce's heart.

I know that doesn't gel with her saying she loves Bruce and all...

David, I read Noir and I wholeheartedly agree with your hard pimping of the book. I think the crushing realization that I both read and (more damningly) paid cover price for the Chuck Austen X-Men issues just drove me to take a potshot at him, not so much you.

Hm, I've never read any Kathy Kane or Outsider stories and was okay with this. Actually, of all of GM's fractured memory narratives (from those pre-RIP stories right back to the solo Rebis issue of Doom Patrol), I thought this was one of the most clear-cut...

Nick, I think it's fair to say I wouldn't be shilling the comic like a cheap whore if I didn't think the execution was pretty damn good as well.

Doug, that's a really good point about the Outsider thing. More than any other story Morrison's told in Batman, this issue really depends on being a Batman nerd more than the others - I guess if you don't know ANYTHING you can just roll with the punches as they come, but anyone with cursory knowledge of Alfred or Kathy Kane would be really confused by this.

Just to put the X-men in perspective, you could say that Chuck Austen also touched on the issues of evolution and natural selection.....except he used unkillable wolfmen as a seperate path of human evolution and every issue of it was god-awful.......there's always something to be said about the execution...

The Bat Radia could be a reference to the ZEA adventure actually happening, or it could be a false memory caused by Batman's constant exposure to fear gas, Joker venom, plant pheromones, and Croc's sewer smell.

The Eraser seems like a very specific character to be using there. Considering his name and abilities and what's going on in this issue, do you think there might be a higher reason why Morrison included him in that page than as an easter egg?

OhhHHHHHhhhh, NOW I can see the Glove as The Devil argument. I took the skin-wearing as typical serial killer gross-ness, but I suppose if it's the devil, then he "wears" people by possessing them?

However, THE DEVIL isn't that big of a reveal. Batman fights the devil all the time, doesn't he? Like, I remember Neron tempting him with Jason Todd in the '90s, and there was that old Brave and the Bold team-up with Sgt. Rock where they fought Satan, right?

"Batman and Robin will never die!" is some sort of reference to something that happens in Batman's head in Morrison's JLA #8, "Imaginary Stories". There, Tim Drake is Batman and Batman's son is Robin. No guarantee it's anything more than that, though.

I'm pretty convinced by the last page and Morrison's promise that the black mask would be a huge reveal that it was Thomas Wayne all along.

I would like to echo the sentiments of a Damien/Alfred series.

In page 23, when the joker gets hit by Damien he says "It's the ...red?... and" after, we see the batmobile (Black paint and red lights) ramming the ambulance. I think it was a nice twist.

The fact that Grant Morrison is writing Bats as well as Final Crisis, and promised a connection, keeps gnawing at me. I wouldn't be surprised if Batman was now immune to the effects of the anti-life equation. Darkseid has much to "fear" from Bruce Wayne.

I actually thought this issue indicated that Dr. Hurt was Thomas Wayne, Jr. Hurt says to Batman, "and if not Dad," in a way that could have been him referring to Batman's father in a pejorative manner, but also could have been him referring to their mutual father in the way siblings do, i.e. "and if not Dad, what should we get Mom for Christmas?"

Great annotations once again. I have one thing to add that occurred to me upon first reading that may or may not have any merit.

The comments on the fourth page's last panel seem to me to describe the bat mite. Specifically the comment "A scar on my consciousness" as there is the unexplained growth or scar on the bat mite's back. On the next page the scar is referred to as something "tattooed" or "scabbed into place". This is just before the mention of the cover personality.

You know, I've been noticing how Didio keeps skipping around the question of whether Morrison will be the regular Batman writer after Gaiman's schtick, and it seems pretty clear from his last interview with Newsarama that he won't. This makes me think that you are onto something David Uzumeri: something is indeed rotten in the state of DC and it's infuriating to think that editorial meddling may have ruined the build-up and climax of what should've been a landmark story.

Further evidence for "Zur-en-arrh" being "Zorro in Arkham," is that young Bruce asks, "What?" immediately afterwards, as if mishearing his dad. So he very well could have (thought he) heard his dad say "Zur-en-arrh."

Sure they can fly that fast and that high. A regular old vampire bat can do about 15 miles an hour; so, with proportional speed and strength of a bat, a genetically modified Man-Bat could easily achieve what was depicted.

Great comments, guys.

Jack Tango, it seems to me there's a third man in the plane since it doesn't look like Hurt would have time to move to the back, and the figure saying that doesn't have a mask on. I thought it was an unrevealed face that was supposed to represent the fear in the devil's eyes, but that would work for Hurt too, so I could have just been confused by the storytelling.

Great catch on the black gloves on the last page, I don't know how I missed that, frisco.

I just wonder how much of this we're supposed to take at face value? And did Bruce just recall that final memory? His dad's last words, that Batman is a crazy concept, seem like the kind of thing that would weigh on him. Was the epilogue supposed to represent that memory coming out? Because I could see that having the give-up-the-cowl effect, maybe. I guess we'll see next week, hopefully.

Further to that, most "flashbacks" are just memories, anyway. So, all the flashbacks are simply memories.

Couple more things:

Page 1) Batman was writing in third person because he doesn't think of himself as Batman the person, Bruce Wayne the mask anymore.

Page 4) The second gargoyle is Dr. Hurt/The Devil (or Darth Maul, heh), the third is Jezebel Jet.

Page 16) Joker is definitely accusing Batman of having apophenia, but his statement of thinking outside the box then having a new box put around him means that Bats just makes the apophenia work; sort of as a self-fulfilling mental affliction. Joker *thinks* he's not creating patterns, but Batman finds them, forces them into the patterns (essentially) and alluva sudden, the Joker's back in the box again.

Page 26) What third man? There is the third Batman, Dr. Hurt and then a silhouetted figure who, if we are to follow standard rules of storytelling, is either the third Batman or Dr. Hurt, not a just-introduced character. Personally, before reading these annotations (well done, btw), I thought it was obviously Dr. Hurt, since it lines up with the side of the helicopter Bruce jumped to, and the side Hurt was on in the first few panels of that page.

I read some spoilers in advance and people just didn't seem satisfied by the ending; I couldn't disagree more. Well played, Grant. Well played.

I just noticed that the paper after the mime has been defeated says "I Give Up", which happens to be a crumpled up version of the paper on the page before.

How about this: The epilogue isn't a *flashback* but a memory (the red and black colour scheme fits memories shown from previous issues) buried/created in Bruce's brain. "Zorro in Arkham" is how he mentally got around "Zur En Arrh." The phrase triggered the alternate personality which triggered the memory which brought him back to the moment he became Batman, and so on...

Just a thought. :-)

Both his mother and his father were wearing black gloves. You can see his father's when he is ruffling Bruce's hair.

Posted this in the wrong comments section, but Morrison definitely seems to have been influenced by Nicohals Meyer's film, the Seven Percent Solution, where Holmes’ victimisation of an innocent maths tutor is given a literal Freudian analysis. during the course of the film the story is told how, when he was a child, Holmes mother betrayed his father by having an affair with Holmes’ maths tutor, leading to Holmes Sr killing her, and then taking his own life. The name of the maths tutor? Moriarty, of course.

The whole betrayal of the son by the father, leading to the death of the mother seems very close to Batman RIP.

Personally, I believe Hurt to be Thomas Wayne, and all Bruce's denials of it are simply hyperbole, as it renders his entire existence since the events in Crime Alley to be meaningless. The evil he has been fighting against is actually a part of him. This is the reason he either doesn't survive the helicopter crash, or doesn't reclaim his old life if he did. After all, this is a man who can survive being buried alive. A simple explosion over the sea wouldn't be much trouble.*

Thematically, Morrison's entire run has been about the relationship between fathers and sons (or their surrogates) and, in particular, how the father eventually lets down the son- Even the Ras A Ghul crossover ties in with this theme, as Ras betrays his daughter and grandson in his desperate attempt to prolong his own life. Similarly, Batman betrays Robin with the relationship he forges with Damian, and there can be no greater betrayal for a son to discover his father being responsible for the murder of his mother.

Temporary replacement personalities for psychic take-overs, strength to escape death traps, back up plans with computers- all everyday occurrences for Batman. But coming face to face with a Freudian nightmare,** now that's a killer.

*As to why the helicopter explodes? It definitely collides with the clock tower to knock it's back rotor off, so I'd imagine it ruptures some fuel lines while doing so, leading it to explode when it crashes into the sea.

**Am I the only one to get a Sherlock Holmesian vibe from the climax? From a great detective meeting his ultimate adversary and both perishing over water, to the 'alternate' take on Moriarty proposed by the film The Seven Per Cent Solution' where Holmes' victimisation of an innocent maths tutor is given Freudian analysis. It transpires that,, when he was a child, Holmes mother betrayed his father by having an affair with Holmes' maths tutor, leading to Holmes Sr killing her, and then taking his own life.
The bats attacking Jet's plane on page 29 are Talia's soldiers. You can see them injecting the Man-Bat serum when everybody's standing around the helicopter wreck.
