FBBP #70 - The Last Will and Testament of the Third Dimension

Posted by Joseph Mastantuono this last year, at the start of September

For the second week running, we’re missing Jamaal. We miss Jamaal so much that we want to remind everyone that we’re still taking suggestions for what we should make him sing on next week’s podcast. A BET IS A BET!

Two books of the week this time out: one for its importance, and another for its je ne sais quoi:
Final Crisis: Superman Beyond #1 by Grant Morrison & Doug Mahnke (annotated here!)
DC Universe: Last Will & Testament by Brad Meltzer & Adam Kubert

Speaking of Last Wills, Virgin Comics has joined the dustbin of comics history alongside CrossGen, Tekno Comix and countless others. What lessons can be learned? What went wrong? Just how many different things has Richard Branson slapped “Virgin” on?

We also begin our discussion on Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. Most of the discussion is Joe introducing the Nausicaa and its creator Hayao Miyazaki, so anyone wanting to catch up still has time. We’ll be doing the second (and final) Nausicaa book club discussion in a couple weeks.

The whole series is translated in seven volumes (Volumes: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7) and you can buy them through Amazon for $10, supporting the site at the same time.

  1. These Boots Are Made for Walkin’-Nancy Sinatra

  2. 1980 - Dirt Nasty

  3. There is only one answer - R. Kelly’s Gotham City

  4. Why not the Prince soundtrack song (having to do the voice and all the other stuff)?

  5. “He felt his stomach sink into his testicles.”

You need to track down that one Mr. Show episode “Like Chickens Delicious Chickens” and the sketch title “The Great Hemingway.”

It makes funny of bad writing like the this (”He felt the lion’s roar in his scrotum”).

  6. The Achewood you’re looking for is:
    http://achewood.com/index.php?date=07232002
“I want you to exist as a mixture of sexiness and danger. That is all.”

  7. what was the name of that manga where people eat pie? I couldn’t catch it.

  8. I really enjoy the podcast guys, thanks for doing it.

  9. Keep it real Jamaal, do “Kiss from a Rose”

  10. I wouldn’t have savaged Last Will necessarily, but I enjoyed listening to every minute of it.

I still say you should make him sing Celine Dion…even talk with her accent before and after the song. Or have him sing that song from The Bodyguard.

  11. isn’t Virgin Comics still a company? from what i understand, they just closed down the New York office and they’re going to reorganize. i’m pretty sure they plan on keeping their publishing efforts in India and other Asian markets. i could be totally wrong about all this, but it seems to me like people are prematurely claiming their death.

  12. Make Jamal sing “My heart will go on” from Titanic.

    Or Batdance.

  13. Really, there’s only one choice after the RNC. I want to hear Jamaal sing “Raising McCain.”

  14. Another vote for Batdance.

  15. I change my vote to Kiss From a Rose.

Batdance has very little to sing.

  16. I’m going for obscure here, for sure, but why not other parts of the Batman soundtrack:

    Prince
    2. Electric Chair
    Prince
    3. The Arms of Orion
    Prince
    4. Partyman
    Prince
    5. Vicki Waiting
    Prince
    6. Trust
    Prince
    7. Lemon Crush
    Prince
    8. Scandalous

Or maybe something old school from the Crow Soundtrack. I love to hear some nice stuff from 1994.

    - l.k.

  17. I will throw in for “Kiss From A Rose”

Or there’s always “Don’t Go CHasing Waterfalls.” If you’re going to make a man sing a song as punishment, it might as well be a song sung by a woman.

  18. The song has been decided and recorded. Thanks for everyone’s input.

  19. <— anxiously awaiting the next podcast download in my iTunes now!

    …still not there…maybe now…dammit…ok…
